Iron Bridge and Ironbridge
There was development at the same site on the river well before the bridge of iron was built. Indeed it was recorded that the bridge building was hampered with many difficulties due to the steep river banks and that, at the site chosen, these banks were heavily encumbered with old buildings and a ferry landing and approach. The area at that time was merely an extension to Madeley.
After the bridge was built, the town continued to grow as a communal gathering point for those wishing the cross the river, and of course eventually became known as Ironbridge.
